AHP Goal Pucks: Landy Ties Forsberg on the All-Time Avs Goal List (2021)

June 4, 2021 by Jay Vean - The AHP

My passion for game worn jerseys and telling their stories has been well documented here for many years. I have quietly collected Avalanche game used and goal scored pucks throughout the years as well. These pucks, just like jerseys, have stories to tell. As expected, I really enjoy doing the research and exploring the details and figured it was time to share some puck history here too. Hoping you appreciate these small pieces of Colorado Avalanche history as much as I do.

I collect goal pucks and game worn jerseys for one reason and that’s to collect and preserve history. As you all well know (and as I have shared before), I’ve always enjoyed doing the homework and learning the unique story that each piece in my collection tells. Acquiring this puck was a no-brainer and I’m really excited to have it and share it with you.

THE DATE: February 27, 2021

THE VENUE: Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona

THE DETAILS: Gabriel Landeskog, on the power play, at 1:58 of the third period. This gave the Avs a 3-1 lead at the time. It was the first of four third period goals the team scored. The Avalanche eventually won this game by a final score of 6-2. This goal was Landeskog’s 202nd career goal which tied him with fellow Swede Peter Forsberg for third place on the all-time Avalanche goal scoring list. Only Milan Hejduk and Joe Sakic have scored more goals than Landeskog and Forsberg while playing for the Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club.

THE ASSISTS: Mikko Rantanen and Samuel Girard

THE HIGHLIGHT:

Please fast forward to 5:35 of the video above to see the highlight of the goal.

I like all Avs goal pucks because, like I said above and previously, they all have stories to tell and details to document. This puck’s story involves names like Peter Forsberg and Gabriel Landeskog though. It’s obviously just a little more special than many of the rest. Here’s to many, many more goals by The Captain while he’s wearing the burgundy and blue.

Until the next goal puck post, thanks for reading and, as always, #GoAvsGo.

AHP Goal Pucks: Compher’s Shorthanded Awesomeness in Arizona (2018)

March 13, 2021 by Jay Vean - The AHP

My passion for game worn jerseys and telling their stories has been well documented here for many years. I have quietly collected Avalanche game used and goal scored pucks throughout the years as well. These pucks, just like jerseys, have stories to tell. As expected, I really enjoy doing the research and exploring the details and figured it was time to share some puck history here too. Hoping you appreciate these small pieces of Colorado Avalanche history as much as I do.

I acquire goals pucks from all kinds of places: directly from teams, buddies that are at games in opposing rinks (more details about this in a future post), NHL and team auctions, eBay, and other collectors too. As mentioned in my last goal puck post, sometimes all that’s needed is being on the app at the right time. The story behind these pucks takes place over several years. I will obviously explain, but first, the pucks.

THE DATE: November 23, 2018

THE VENUE: Gila River Arena. Glendale, Arizona.

THE GOALS: J.T. Compher, shorthanded, at 7:28 of the first period of play and J.T. Compher, shorthanded, at 8:53 of the first period of play.

THE DETAILS: These were Compher’s fourth and fifth goals of the season and the 20th and 21st goals of his career. Compher had been out the previous 16 games before this as he recovered from a concussion. That’s how you return to the lineup after being out for a bit. There was some NHL history behind these two pucks as well.

J.T. Compher became the 20th player to score two shorthanded goals in a span of two minutes or less since 1933-34 and just the fourth in the past 15 years: also Michael Grabner (2013-14), Tobias Rieder (2014-15) and Chris Tierney (2017-18). #NHLStats pic.twitter.com/loodsPYVY2

Mikko Rantanen, who had been in the penalty box while Compher was busy scoring shorthanded goals, scored on yet another breakaway 46 seconds after Compher’s second goal of the first period to put the Avs up 3-0. The Avalanche eventually won the game by a final score of 5-1.

THE ASSISTS: Matt Nieto had the lone assist on the first goal. The second goal was unassisted.

THE HIGHLIGHTS: At 1:40 of the video below. Games in Arizona have always been very well attended by Avalanche faithful. This game was no different.

Here’s a shorter package from SPORTSNET. It’s always fun to hear Marc Moser’s call as well.

As this game was happening I was trying to figure out how I might be able to get these goal pucks in my collection. The Coyotes were working with Fanatics at the time so I knew they would eventually show up on eBay. When they were listed a few weeks later I was able to put in offers for both of the pucks. I acquired one of them while the other one was purchased by someone else with the “Buy It Now” option. I then figured this “project” was something I was never going to be able to complete. I did my best at the time though. That’s all that could be done.

Fast forward to a little over two years later and the second goal puck gets listed on eBay again for about the same price as it was listed for originally. This was a no brainer. Goal pucks are fun. A pair of goal pucks with some cool hockey history behind them are even better, especially since I thought I would never have the chance to have them both. It’s exciting when things work out, even years later.

More goal puck stories soon. Thanks for reading. Talk to you again soon and #GoAvsGo.

AHP Goal Pucks: Nathan MacKinnon’s Montreal Magic (2015)

February 27, 2021 by Jay Vean - The AHP

My passion for game worn jerseys and telling their stories has been well documented here for many years. I have quietly collected Avalanche game used and goal scored pucks throughout the years as well. These pucks, just like jerseys, have stories to tell. As expected, I really enjoy doing the research and exploring the details and figured it was time to share some puck history here too. Hoping you appreciate these small pieces of Colorado Avalanche history as much as I do.

There are times on eBay when something gets listed at a certain “Buy It Now” price and there’s this instinctive feeling that the item won’t last long at all on the site. This puck was one of those times and one of those pickups. Sometimes you’re on the app at the right time and you get lucky.

THE DATE: November 14, 2015

THE VENUE: Bell Centre. Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

THE GOAL: Nathan MacKinnon at 18:38 of the first period of play.

THE DETAILS: This was MacKinnon’s eighth goal of the season, the 46th goal of his career, his second goal of the first period, and his second goal in 13 seconds. I’m guessing this puck has the least amount of actual game play on it as compared to any other puck in my collection. This goal made the game 3-0 at the time. The Avs eventually won this game by a final score of 6-1.

THE ASSISTS: Mikhail Grigorenko and Matt Duchene

THE HIGHLIGHT: At :45 of the video below. This was a very nice backhand.

When you get the chance to add a goal puck from one of the best players in the game you do it. Always fun to go back in time and watch some older footage too. Thanks for checking out the post. There will be more to come.

Until the next AHP goal puck, #GoAvsGo.
